Sailboat Refit
Some boat buyers fall in love with older sailing boats. It may be that
clipper bow that grabs them, it might be they really want something
that reminds them of a pirate ship. It may be the beauty of a lot of
teak on deck. What ever the allure, there aren’t many new boats built
in these styles today and buyers interested in these boats will be
looking at older vessels. These older boats tend to be high
maintenance, and require knowledgeable owners who stay on top of their
boats to keep them in excellent shape. Unfortunately, many of these
boats fall into a state of disrepair, with their value plummeting as
well. This presents an opportunity for a buyer who longs for such a
vessel to acquire one at a low price. Unfortunately, that isn’t the end
of the story. Now the new owner faces a major refit including what can
be some very expensive repairs and refurbishment. Buyers take on these
tasks however, as there is a segment of the boat buying public that
just has to have such a vessel.
There is considerable risk in such a venture. The results can be
rewarding, but if you aren’t careful and you don’t do your homework,
the results can turn into a disaster. Doug has had experience buying
and refitting such vessels for his own account.
Doug and his wife Deedy purchased Kokopelli, a Bob Perry designed 1986
46 foot pilot house sloop. The boat had been lovingly maintained, refit
and upgraded continuously over the years by a very knowledgeable owner.
Doug continued to upgrade the boat till Hurricane IKE claimed her in
late 2008. Fortunately, the boat was reparable and unique enough that
Doug and Deedy decided to repair her and use the opportunity to make
additional upgrades and improvements as a part of the project. Today
the Payne’s have a near Bristol sailing yacht that is truly unique.
Doug is happy to share those experiences with his clients, and in the
right circumstances would hire on to help an owner manage such a
project using his knowledge gained from this project and his contacts
through out the marine industry in the Galveston Bay area.
